Acupuncture Treatment for Sports Injuries

If you participate in sports or perform any strenuous physical activity, you may be familiar with sports injuries. Sports injuries are injuries that may occur while participating in organized sports, competitions, during training sessions or other organized fitness activities. For more sedentary individuals, a sports injury may be more likely to occur during less strenuous activities such as walking.

Sports injuries occur for a variety of reasons, including improper training, lack of appropriate footwear, over training, other other reasons.

Sports injuries are generally fall into two categories. The first is called an acute traumatic injury. These injuries usually involve a single event for example, getting body-checked in the back, in hockey.

The second category of sports injury is called a chronic injury. Chronic injuries are those that happen over a longer period of time, and are sometimes called overuse injuries. Chronic injuries are usually the result of repetitive training, such as in running, pitching a ball or other activities that require highly repetitive movements. Some chronic injuries can be the result of repeated sedentary behaviour such as sitting at an office desk with poor posture for long periods.

Sprain and strain of the joint and surrounded tissue are one of the most common sports related injuries (sprain involves the ligament and strain involves muscle or tendon).

A Traditional Chinese medicine practitioner will use acupuncture, cupping and other techniques to address the injury help alleviate pain. Acupuncture is very effective at treating sports injuries. For this reason, many professional sports teams have acupuncturists on staff.
